Vittoz is a method of mental training in which a skilled practitioner guides a client through a carefully selected series of manual training exercises, movements and visualizations designed to increase creative and efficient mental function and enhance the experience of joy in life.
Vittoz exercise takes advantage of the mind’s natural capacity to remap its own neurological pathways (called “Neuroplasticity”). The method reduces or removes chronic pain (such as phantom pain commonly present in persons with lost limbs), improves concentration skills in children as well as adults, and generally results in a heightened, simplified, less stressful and more pleasurable experience of the world and our place in it.
Unlike many therapeutic methods, Vittoz focuses primarily on increasing awareness of our senses of sight, hearing, olfaction, taste and touch as well as internal kinesthetic senses of position, pressure, temperature, tension and body memory. It seeks to regain the ability to receive sensory input in a pure, non-intellectualized fashion, which is restful to the mind and healing for the spirit.
Through Vittoz, one can acquire the habit and the pleasure of living in the present moment.
The method was developed in the nineteenth century by Swiss physician Dr. Roger Vittoz (1863-1925). The method is practiced today in 37 countries on three continents by hundreds of certified Vittozien practitioners and countless professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, physicians, priests, wardens, physical therapists, and the medical community in general.
